The Ewing family is of Scottish extraction; however, the branch followed in this work emanated from Coleraine, County Londonderry, in Northern Ireland. The Scotch-Irish immigrant ancestor of these Ewings was Nathaniel (ca. 1692-September 6, 1748), who arrived in America in 1725 and who, with his half-brother William, settled in Cecil County, Maryland, near the Pennsylvania line. James Ewing, another of Nathaniel's four half-brothers, settled in Prince Edward County, Virginia. This detailed family history traces the various lines of descent of Nathaniel and William Ewing and a number of their cousins from the 17th through the early 20th centuries.
