Including Notes on the Vinson Families of Newport

David Melvill, who came from Glasgow, Scotland, was living in Yarmouth on Cape Cod in the 1680s. He married Mary, the daughter of Rev. Samuel Willard of Old South Church in Boston, and after several years in Eastham on the Cape, they moved to Boston, where he was a merchant and tavern keeper. His two sons, Thomas, a builder, and David, a peruke maker, went to Newport, Rhode Island, where they had many descendants, including Samuel Vinson's progeny. Other families treated for two or more generations are Yates, Weeden, Bissell, Swinburne, Munro, Bull, Townsend, Tilley, and Irish. The fourth generation began adding an e, so the name became Melville.
