When Nelson McMahon married Louise Rathbun, they forever linked his ancestral families from the Middle Atlantic with hers harkening back to New England. After the American Revolutionary War, his ancestors moved south into Virginia, while hers moved west across New York state. Both sides of the family made their way into the Midwest before the Civil War would have placed them on opposite sides.

Surnames covered include McMahon of Iowa, Ribble of Virginia, Cretsinger/Kretzinger of Maryland, Bohn of Ohio, and Esch of Pennsylvania on the German and Irish McMahon side; and Rathbun/Rathbone of Rhode Island, Ramsdell of Massachusetts, and Hollister, Hills, Lord, and Haynes of Connecticut. Also covered in an appendix is the Conroe family of New York and New Jersey.
