The immigrant ancestors of the Hawkins and Lawshe lines covered in this book arrived in America within twenty years of each other in the early 1700s. Their backgrounds differed vastly: Philemon Hawkins descended from a family of merchants and seamen in England, while Johannes Jacob van Laaschet left Prussia for America with other members of the Brethren congregation.
Over time, members of these two families made their way south and were united through the marriage of Captain Lewis Madison Lawshe and Cherokee Hawkins, daughter of Senator Benjamin Hawkins, at Fort Hawkins, Georgia, in 1819. The Hawkins and Lawshe Families of North Carolina and Mississippi covers the challenges faced and successes experienced by these two families from their arrival to America through the post-Depression and war years.
