Finding information about New York ancestors can be tricky. A fire in 1911 at the State Library and the fact that statewide registration of vital records did not start until 1880 only adds to the difficulty. In this online lecture, Chief Genealogist David Allen Lambert will discuss go-to repositories for research in the Empire State—including the New York State Library and Archives, the New York Public Library, and more. He’ll cover essential resources that can be accessed on-site at the repositories as well as digital collections that are available online.
This syllabus is intended to accompany our online lecture On the Ground: Top Repositories for Researching Upstate New York (archived recording as of 07/10/25): ). It includes a reference for all resources mentioned in the session, plus links to many others.
